News Photography

In high school I worked on the school newspaper staff as a photographer.  The digital camera was brand new to us and so we all used manual film cameras.

There were 5-6 of us taking photos and we filled a black and white paper with photos we printed in the dark room and then scanned into Mac OS 8.  A handful of photos, mostly head shots, were taken on the amazing 1-2 megapixel digital cameras the school had.  The paper was well over 1/3 photographs.  We handed it over 1000 copies to students and most people enjoyed the photos, finding their friends was a treat, with a lesser number reading the articles.  The school paper could be seen as an introduction to what the media has to offer.

Move forward to today and the KC Star website is mostly words.  On their front page I counted over 200 links with less than 10 photos, most of them were ads or head shots of the person writing the article, and they’re all tiny.  I was disappointed that there was not great photography featured anywhere and made do for years.  Recently a friend pointed out kcfreepress.com.  I was impressed to see a great set of photo albums on their site with easy to find features pointing you to their photography.  It appears that in one day they post more photographs than the Star does in a week.  Around the same time I added an RSS reader to my iPhone and found a number of local blogs to read.  Sure, I still read the KC Star website, but I have supplemented it with these new sources of news.

Hopefully the KC Star can learn something from the KC Free Press and local blogs.
